I'm Back!

Well, this is a bit awkward isn't it? I'm sure it's no great secret that I've sort of neglected the blog over these past couple of months. In fact my last post here was on March 24th, the day after the UK went into lockdown. But where have I been? What have I been doing? well, allow me to answer...

The main reason why there has been a severe lack of posts on here is to do with my university course, this blog and my YouTube channel have suffered just because I haven't had the time to produce new content and, at the end of the day, my university work is a tad more important than a Doctor Who based blog.

Secondly, the ever so minor situation of a worldwide pandemic. What's been happening around the world has been an awful thing to witness and as a consequence my attention wasn't on this blog. But now that lockdown measures are being relaxed and it looks as if we can see a light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel, I thought it was high time I resurrect this blog, if for no other reason than to give me something to do between now and starting my second year of University in September (that's if we're actually allowed on campus by then).

So, what've I missed? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot! Doctor Who announcements have been coming thick and fast over the last couple of months (so I doubt I'd have been able to keep up anyway) from dozens of incredible Big Finish announcements, to a brand new selection of B&M exclusive Doctor Who figures and let us not forget the intriguing 'Time Lord Victorious' (more on that in my next post). It really has been a great year for Doctor Who so far.

There we have it folks, this is my sort of welcome back and as ever thank you for the continued support for not just the blog, but my YouTube channel and Instagram account.

Doctor Who: The Animations - What's Next?

With the release of 'The Faceless Ones' this week and the upcoming animation of 'Fury From The Deep' later in the year. It begs the question, what could we see next from the animation range?

Not counting 'Fury From The Deep', there are currently only sixteen either fully missing or partially missing stories left to be animated. Below is a list of the stories with the amount of episodes missing from that particular serial:
  • 'Marco Polo' (7 episodes)
  • 'The Crusade' (2 episodes)
  • 'Galaxy 4' (3 episodes)
  • 'The Myth Makers' (4 episodes)
  • 'Mission To The Unknown'
  • 'The Daleks' Master Plan' (9 episodes)
  • 'The Massacre' (4 episodes)
  • 'The Celestial Toymaker' (3 episodes)
  • 'The Savages' (4 episodes)
  • 'The Smugglers' (4 episodes)
  • 'The Highlanders' (4 episodes)
  • 'The Underwater Menace (2 episodes)
  • 'The Evil Of The Daleks' (6 episodes)
  • 'The Abomniable Snowmen' (5 episodes)
  • 'The Wheel In Space' (4 episodes)
  • 'The Space Pirates' (6 episodes)
(in the case of 'The Underwater Menace', that story was released back in 2014 with telesnap reconstructions for the two missing episodes)

But which stories are we likely to see next and in what order? Here are my predictions (word of warning, this is purely my opinion and isn't backed by any rumour). With that bit of clarification out of the way let's dive in...

1. 'The Evil Of The Daleks'

Personally I think Evil will be the next one to be animated for release early next year. I think this because of a few reasons; the animation teams so far have strived to make season 4 as complete as possible (especially with the release of 'The Macra Terror' last year and 'The Faceless Ones' this month), Evil seems like the next logical way to go.

Also, it's a fan favourite story and one I think the vast majority of fans would be thrilled to see animated (plus - there are Daleks in it and thats bound the be a draw!)

2. 'The Wheel In Space'

Now i'll be the first to admit that i'm not a fan of Wheel, two episodes remain of this tale and yep, the results are far from stellar. Nevertheless this is the last Cyberman story to not have it's own DVD release to that would bound to be an incentive. Plus last year for a BFI event in London, the first ten minutes of Wheel part one was animated (which was included as a bonus feature on the Macra Terror release) and personally I thought it looked great! and I found myself really wanting to watch the rest of this story so fingers crossed its sooner rather than later!

3. 'The Abombiable Snowmen'

Another classic tale, on par with Evil, and quite an iconic one as this was the story to introduce us to the Yeti and the Great Intelligence. What's why I could imagine this one being quite high on the list.

4. 'The Celestial Toymaker'

Personally this is one of my favourite Hartnell adventures and it's a real shame that not much of it still exists. Especially with the reference to the Toymaker in 'Can You Hear Me?' I feel like animating this story soon would give it certain relevance. Also, this story would lend itself perfectly to the animation format and the team could do so much with it, especially with their creative deviation from the original multi camera shoot from back in the 60s.

5. 'The Crusade'

'The Crusade' is one of them that fans have clamoured after for many years, and given that only two episodes need to be animated it does strike as odd that we haven't already seen this. However the animation team have said that the sheer amount of costumes, sets and characters are the reasons why we haven't seen this story animated. But I could see that, especially if 'The Collection - Season 2' boxset is coming, we could eventually see this tale animated.

6. 'The Massacre'

This, to me, is a particular underrated story. It is the first to use William Hartnell in a duel role and it's a story that nobody knows much about considering all four episodes are missing and we only have the audio soundtrack (+ Target book)

7. 'Galaxy 4'

'Galaxy 4' is one of Who's more obscure stories and one that I think, if done right, could lend itself perfectly to animation. We already have episode 3 so three more episodes isn't that far out of the realms of possibility - even if the story isn't that fondly remembered.

8. 'The Savages'
9. 'The Smugglers'

I've grouped these two together solely because all episodes are missing from both of these stories and we don't know a great deal about either of these so I think it would be really nice to see these as 'new'. That's why I put these higher than some other more recognisable tales such as Master Plan

10. 'The Myth Makers'

I don't know much about Myth Makers, but what I can say from listening to the audio soundtrack, is that it appears to be a fun tale and one which I think could suit animation well (especially with the Trojan Horse) and I'm sure it would be better received than what's next on my list...

11. 'The Space Pirates'

The last of the 'easily doable' stories is 'The Space Pirates'. I've put this one so low down because let's face it, it isn't very good. All six episodes are missing from this story so the animation team would have their hands full and I don't think there would be a great number of people clamouring for this story anyway so alas it is here. Would be nice for completest reasons though.

12. 'Marco Polo'
13. 'The Highlanders'

These next two are really low down on the list despite me wanting them animated ASAP for the sole reason that it's been confirmed by the animation team that these two stories will be low down on the list regardless because of the settings, the amount of characters and the costumes. While this is sad to hear we can only hope that we see these two stories down the line - and especially in the case of 'Marco Polo' it'd be great to see a complete first season on the shelf finally!

Plus Highlanders is the first story to feature Jamie so I think we need that story for historic reasons given how important Jamie is in the Second Doctor's era.

14. 'The Daleks' Master Plan' (+ 'Mission To The Unknown')

Finally we've got Master Plan. To me this would have to be the last story to be animated purely down to the sheer size of the story. It's twelve episodes set across a dozen locations and including an enormous cast. All of these elements would drive the budget right up to it possibly being the only release of that year as it would effectively be taking up two stories worth of animation. I've seen many people suggest releasing this story in two parts - something i'd actually not be opposed to.

They could include 'Mission To The Unknown' as a bonus but in all honesty i'm very happy with the UCLAN reconstruction we saw last year. If there was a way for the BBC to release that production in official packaging then that would be lovely.

So there we are. There is what's left to be animated and in what order I think these stories will be released. Let me know if you agree, if you disagree and what you think of these stories.

Doctor Who Action Figure Review: Judoon Captain

Big Finish: The Lost Stories - Return Of The Cybermen!

Big Finish brought a little light to some otherwise quite gloomy times today by announcing the first release in the sixth series of lost stories; 'Return Of The Cybermen'!

The Lost Stories is a Big Finish range running since 2009 adapting television scripts that were never made into the audio format

'Return Of The Cybermen' was a story originally devised for Season 12 back in 1975. However when Gerry Davies' script was rewritten by Robert Holmes, the story became 'Revenge Of The Cybermen' - a story that we all know and love today. But now Gerry Davies' script has been rediscovered and has been adapted by John Dorney.

It'll be really interesting to listen to this one. Hearing Tom Baker fit back into his first season is something many of us thought would never happen so this is sure to be a treat! and to get a Cyberman story in line with 'The Tomb Of The Cybermen' and 'The Moonbase' is definitely gonna be an atmospheric treat.

'Return Of The Cybermen' can be pre-ordered now from www.bigfinish.com for £12.99 on digital or £14.99 on CD. The story is set to be released in November 2021. - So we do have quite a wait!

MORE Upcoming Figurines From Eaglemoss!

Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic we might all now be in self isolation, but at least we have some Eaglemoss figurines to look forward to in June!

Issues 177 and 178 will comprise of Judoon Captain Pol-Kon-Don from series 12's 'Fugitive of the Judoon' and Terry Molloy's Davros from season 21's 'Resurrection of the Daleks'. So not only do we have our first series 12 figurine, we also have the penultimate Davros needed to complete our lineups (if we can have a David Gooderson next please and thank you).

What came as a particular surprise to me was the second in the range of Big Finish based sets, this time based on Dark Eyes 2-4 and featuring the Eighth Doctor in his blue leather jacket and sachel (!), Liv Chenka (!!) and a Dalek. How incredible is this?! It's amazing that Eaglemoss can bring us character that otherwise have no other physical visual recreation.

All these figurines will available to order from the Eaglemoss shop and will be out this June.

Doctor Who Series 12 DVD & Blu-Ray Details Revealed!

The DVD and Blu-Ray releases of Series 12 have been listed for several weeks now but now that the series has concluded, we finally know what bonus features will be included in the box sets. Unfortunately, the contents leave a lot to be desired...

Series 12 will also include last year's new year special 'Resolution'.

Both the DVD and Blu-Ray releases will include the following:

  • 10 'closer look' behind the scenes documentaries
  • 3 commentaries
  • 'What to expect in series 12' preview
The preview of series 12 is a particularly odd bonus feature as surely we've already seen the episodes we're buying so why would we need to see a preview?

Gone are the days where we could get discs filled with bonus features like deleted scenes and outtakes but alas, at least the commentaries might be interesting. Depending on who does them.

Plus we'll be getting four art cards of the TARDIS team. These are the individual posters we saw of the main four released in the run up to series 12.

Also confirmed was the cover art, which is, predictably, the Series 12 key art seen on all the posters so this doesn't come as a surprise.

The series 12 box set will be priced at £34.99 on DVD and £39.99 on Blu-Ray and will be released on April 20th. You can pre-order whichever set takes your fancy from the links below:

B&M 2020: What Could We See?

With last night surprise announcement of a brand new wave of figures and the knowledge that we will be getting figures of Ryan and Yaz in a B&M set later this year. I thought it would be fun to take a look at what figures we could potentially see this year from B&M. For this list I will only be looking at straight reissues/ repaints and slight tweaks (akin to last year's Harry Sullivan which used a new head on an existing body), so characters that'd need a whole new sculpt are out of the question.

The Thirteenth Doctor Set

We already know two of the figures in this set; Ryan Sinclair and Yasmin Khan, we've seen these figures quite a lot over the last few months and, while it is a shame we aren't getting them in the wave alongside the Doctor and Graham, it is nice to know that we'll be able to complete our 2018 TARDIS team one way or another.

But what could the third figure be? The most likely option will be a variant of the Thirteenth Doctor, my guess would be either in her light blue t-shirt from 'Resolution'. But if we're thinking a little further a field what could we potentially see? The pipe-dream would obviously be the new design of Cybermen from Series 12, but as that would require a completely new sculpt the more likely option, in my mind, would be The Master from 'Spyfall' in his tuxedo. This would be quite easy to achieve by using a new head sculpt and placing it onto the 10th Doctor tuxedo body. The body itself wouldn't need any changes but perhaps to increase accuracy CO could paint the trainers black to at least give the illusion that they're shoes.

The Other Two Sets?

We don't know anything about these sets but the general consensus is that they will be classic series oriented. Last year we saw a slew of Sontarans so I think this year we'll have focus on another monster, and what I think is most likely is the Cybermen. I think a re-release of the 'Revenge' Cybermen is likely for two of the figures, probably the Cyber Leader and Cyberman. For the third figure i'd say a tweaked 4th Doctor would be most likely as the cravat could be repainted in the more accurate colours. But personally I'd like to see a figure of Sarah Jane, if for no other reason than to complete our Season 12 TARDIS team. This could be easily achieved by using the Primeval Claudia Brown body repainted in the camo colours and a new younger Elisabeth Sladen headsculpt. I think this would be a great set as it would finally give collectors a classic series Sarah Jane and give us more 'Revenge' Cybermen, figures that have become very expensive on the after market. CO could also throw in a Cybermat is they were feeling generous.

For the third set, it would be awesome if CO could give us a complete collection of classic Cybermen with the variation from 'The Wheel In Space'. It's mad to think that this is the only classic design that hasn't been made in figure form but actually it wouldn't be that hard to achieve on Character's limitations. Combine a 'Tomb' head with an 'Invasion' body and have a few newly sculpted wires and hey presto! CO wouldn't even have to go to the extent of tweaking the headsculpt to add the unique mouthpiece, just give us some different paint variation and i'm sure collectors would lap it up. I know i'd be buying a few. We know this sculpt exists so it's not too far beyond the realm of possibility to see this happening.

For the other two figures, a re-release of the 2nd Doctor could happen, or better still, tweak the headsculpt to add a hat and mould a removable life jacket to give us the Doctor as he appears in 'Fury From The Deep'. This would give a fresh twist on a previously familiar figure. For the third figure, i'm sure we'd all love to see a figure of Jamie McCrimmon (I know I certainly would) but a simpler alternative would be a darker green Ice Warrior from the Peladon stories. Not only would this be a simple variant, but it would also give us some Ice Warriors for our Jon Pertwee shelves.

So those are my predictions for the three sets. There are dozens of other possible repaints that could be done but those are my predictions based on whats relevant/ wanted and if CO are going to follow the same pattern as they did last year. It is worth noting that we're already basically getting two brand new figures in Yaz and Ryan so anything else is a bonus. I'm sure i'm wrong with some of these predictions and regardless I look forward to, hopefully, being surprised by what's coming up this summer.

New Classic Doctor Who Figures From B&M!

Well, this was unexpected! Tonight a press release went out detailing a new range of figures hitting B&M stores from March 4th (which is tomorrow as I type). This is all very sudden, but so very welcome!

While three of the four sets (the Doctor/ Dalek sets) are variants on those we saw last year, we will be treated to a brand new set of the Third Doctor and TARDIS from 'The Monster Of Peladon'. All sets will retail at £19.99. Below is the press release along with all the variations between these and last years sets.

Character Options is proud to announce the next batch of products to be released as part of its Doctor Who master toy line up, with four new sets going on sale in B&M on March 4th, 2020.

'The Monster Of Peladon' Collector Set

This set features an exclusive figure of The Third Doctor in his splendid dark bottle green jacket with grey lapels, combined with a dark blue tie, a lime coloured shirt with dark edging and dark grey/ brown trousers. The light blue TARDIS comes with standard opening doors and signage, a black phone door and the newer low-profile base. Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully presented in Classic Style Doctor Who heritage packaging with diarama card insert.

Next, we have the three Doctor/ Dalek sets. These are variants on last years sets and feature some changes to the existing figures.

The Eighth Doctor & Dalek Interrogator Prime

The Eighth Doctor & Dalek Interrogator Prime Figure Set is based on the Big Finish Doctor Who audiobook - In The Garden Of Death. The Eighth Doctor figure is presented in a revised dark blue, heavy wash jacket with antique bronze buttons, dark grey jeans and brown boots. His nemesis, the Dalek Interrogator figure, features a blue tinged dome, slats and hemispheres plus a brighter blue casing.

The War Doctor & Dalek Scientist

The War Doctor & Dalek Scientist Figure Set is based on the Big Finish Doctor Who audiobook - A Thing Of Guile. Complete with all new War Doctor figure with black weathered jacket, red waistcoat, darker hair colour and recoloured spats. The set also includes the Dalek Scientist which features new paint decoration including a Pewter blue dome and hemispheres.

The Seventh Doctor & Axis Strike Squad Dalek

The Seventh Doctor & Axis Strike Squad Dalek is based on the Big Finish Doctor Who audiobook - Gallifrey VI. Featuring an all new version of The Seventh Doctor figure with a darker jacket and hat plus an Axis Strike Squad Dalek figure with silver rather than gold slats and waist band.

Personally, I think these new figures look great (particularly the Third Doctor, TARDIS and War Doctor) and I can't wait to pick them up and hopefully review them! Last year's sets were pretty easy to find so I only hope that these will follow suit when i'm hunting them down, hopefully, this weekend.
